Learn about wayfinding

Wayfinding is not something that is widely taught at schools and universities. However, the recognition of its importance and the demand for wayfinding specialists is growing. MijksWise develops educational programs varying from single workshops and lectures to extended courses for students, design professionals, and clients. For facility managers, we offer practice-oriented courses full of tips and examples on how to manage wayfinding projects.

In our courses, we emphasize the multidisciplinary nature of wayfinding. We provide a strong theoretical basis by giving lectures, reading assignments, and group discussions. We strongly believe in ‘learning by doing’, challenging and engaging students and professionals with varied assignments. Through our partnership with Mijksenaar, we are able to include real-world examples from actual projects and arrange internships or collaborations.

Are you interested in learning about wayfinding—be it a ‘light’ one-day course or a full-fledged program? Contact us to discuss the possibilities.

Wayfinding Academy for Mijksenaar

We developed an extensive course for Mijksenaar’s junior wayfinding experts. Students dive deep into the field of wayfinding, studying theories and disciplines, working on assignments, and above all: learning with and from each other. First, we defined the intended learning outcomes: what should students know and be able to do at the end of the course? Next, we designed the course to achieve these outcomes. The didactic approach is based on two main principles: alignment & learning by doing. This implies that the means of teaching and assessment are aligned to the intended learning outcomes. And it means that what the student does is more important in determining what is learned than what the teacher does.

The city of proximity

Dordrecht is a city that is growing and facing some major spatial challenges. The railway zone is a main development area, for which Mecanoo Architects has created an ambitious vision. HKU Master Interior Architecture students have focused on this area in their project ‘city of proximity’. The students’ assignment is to design possible interventions that create new ‘places to be’ and encourage walking and biking. MijksWise is involved in the project as guest lecturer and mentor. The results of this project will be presented to stakeholders, including the municipality of Dordrecht and Mecanoo Architects.

A teachers’ course

Nimeto Utrecht is a passionate trade school. One of the educational programs they offer is ‘Signmaking & Wayfinding. The Nimeto team has developed this interesting and versatile program that is now entering its fourth year. The team is constantly evaluating and further improving the program based on student feedback, their own experiences, and developments in the industry. They’ve asked MijksWise to design a course for their team of teachers at Signmaking & Wayfinding. Meet our new intern

My name is Isaäc Puijk and recently I started an internship at MijksWise. With my background in behavioural and organisational science, MijksWise is a great place to further pursue my interests in the psychological, theoretical and analytical aspects of wayfinding. While writing my thesis on the interaction between spatial settings and user behaviour, I discovered that spatial design and users’ desires often don’t correspond. User-centered design research is a key concept throughout my current project: what makes a place work and what does not? During my internship I hope to contribute to answering these questions, as well as learn about wayfinding in general.
